Triplicated Systems

There are some environments where the requirements are such that they demand the full Triplicated solution.  In Triplicated systems there are three processors working independently monitoring and controlling the same selected items and a fourth processor checking that the three processors are operating harmoniously.   

Should the monitoring processor detect a malfunction either within or outside of the control system a check is made to identify where the problem lies.  This is done using a consensus or “two-out-of-three” voting system.  If only one of the PLC’s identifies a fault the system will override this decision to ensure that the fault is not acted on, ensuring fault tolerance.  The fault is logged and forces all the PLC’s to operate correctly.  This system is capable of continuous operation even when multiple single faults are registered.
