Based in London, Triplex was established in 1998 when the first Triplicated fault tolerant Automatic Power Control System was installed for a major financial institution in the City of London.

At that time there were no known triplicated systems in building power control, so the original concept was demonstrated in working model form to consultants and the Client’s engineers, who were seeking a substantial improvement to the reliability of the existing system. This model clearly showed the huge benefits to be gained for the business, as it was possible to introduce component and wiring faults on it, and yet prove conclusively that 100% correct operation was still assured.

The huge advantages to be gained were clear to all; Triplex Power Control were subsequently commissioned to design, manufacture, and install a replacement power control system specifically for this building, using these principles. Since then, this system has operated 100% correctly, and has tolerated failures of some components such as Phase Failure Relays, which were readily replaced without ever having adverse effect on any supplies.

This totally new approach to Automatic Power Management has been further developed to incorporate far more complex control requirements, using PLCs to increase flexibility, log faults, and provide full information of events and system status to building maintenance staff. As an example, one of the landmark highrise buildings in Canary Wharf, which is the Global Head Office of another major financial institution, relies heavily on this system for automatic control of all critical power. Again the system has showed a new level of resilience, and provided 100% uptime since installation some years ago.

The fundamental principles used to achieve this new level of resilience are similar to those used in the aircraft industry, where single faults simply cannot be allowed to cause failure of the control system overall. Such dependability is now crucial for use in all types of critical building services applications for businesses, such as Banks, Air Traffic Control, Financial Dealing Rooms, Data Centres, Military Radar Installations, Hospitals etc.

Many companies are faced with the dilemma of an ever-growing demand for critical power, yet must suffer increased restraints on capital expenditure. Triplex have worked with major corporate companies in the UK and overseas to design and install Power Control Systems that address this problem; for instance reliable and fault-tolerant load shed systems can be used to make best use of available power, whilst at the same time ensuring that critical systems continue to operate. In this way the expense and disruption of installing extra generation can be avoided, yet the ability to extend in the future retained.

Our reputation for reliability and capability has grown steadily. Triplex Power Control is now used and trusted not only by Major “blue chip” financial businesses, but is also used in the Defence Market for power control of vital installations in remote areas.
